A space jellyfish is a rocket launch-related phenomenon caused by sunlight reflecting off the high altitude rocket plume gases emitted by a launching rocket. The effect is similar to that of a jellyfish in space, with the Sun appearing to be the “jellyfish’s” bell. The effect was first observed during the launch of the Apollo 10 mission in 1969, and has since been seen during numerous rocket launches.
